Section of North Canal Boulevard in Redmond will close to traffic on Monday
North Canal Boulevard in Redmond will close to through traffic on Monday, June 20 as part of the US 97 reroute project. The closure, between King and Negus ways, is expected to last up to 30 days. Access will be allowed for residents in the area. Travelers need to find alternate routes through the area. Suggested detour routes will be posted.
During the closure, contractor crews for Oregon Department of Transportation will reconstruct the existing N. Canal Boulevard section at the connection to the new NE Second Street extension.
The extension of NE Second Street, and work on other local roads, is part of a plan to complete some infrastructure to handle traffic while the US 97 Reroute mainline is constructed. The extensions of NE Ninth and NW Seventh streets and the construction of the Maple-Negus Bridge are other examples of building the infrastructure.
The Reroute will create a new, less congested north-south travel option for residents and visitors of Redmond. It will also get truck traffic out of downtown and give business the opportunity to attract shoppers to a quieter, more pleasant area. Work on the US 97 mainline is scheduled to begin next year, with the project anticipated to be finished in 2007.
