Public Invited to Celebrate Remodeled
Midland Rest Area

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) invites the community to attend the dedication of the remodeled Midland Rest Area on Tuesday, June 20. The event, which is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the rest area, will include a short presentation by local and state officials and light refreshments.

The event will not only dedicate the new facility, but also show the partnership between transportation and tourism. The Midland Rest Area, which allows a shady stopping point for travelers, also houses a welcome center for visitors and an informational kiosk for the Volcanic Scenic Legacy Bypass, a 500-mile journey from the Southern Cascades in California, through Klamath Falls, past Crater Lake.

Speakers for the event include Oregon Transportation Commissioner Stuart Foster, State Representative Bill Garrard, ODOT Region 4 Manager Bob Bryant, and Cindy Deas, coordinator of the Klamath, Lake, Modoc, Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Working Group, which worked to get the Volcanic Scenic Legacy Bypass established.

The rest area, located eight miles south of Klamath Falls on US 97, was closed in November 2005 to allow for construction of new restroom building and to make improvements to the information center. The rest area opened in May with a bathroom facility twice as large as the previous building to allow for better service and future increase in use. The roof of the information center was replaced and its heating/cooling system was improved.
