US 97: Expect delays Saturday
Funeral procession to travel from Redmond to Madras
The Oregon Department of Transportation advises motorists to expect delays on US 97 between Redmond and Madras on the afternoon of Saturday, July 1. Additionally, other local roadways may experience congestion and delays as vehicles wait on side streets for the procession to pass through the area.
Local law enforcement officials anticipate that a funeral procession of as many as 300 vehicles will travel from the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond to a cemetery in northeast Madras following services for Pfc. Thomas Tucker of Madras at the fairgrounds. The service is scheduled to begin at 1 pm and may conclude as early as 2:30 pm.
Motorists are advised to yield to the procession, and should not cross or interfere with the procession unless directed by a public agency representative.
Upon completion of the service, the funeral procession to Madras will begin. All side street traffic will be held until the procession has safely passed. This will affect highway and local roadway traffic between Redmond and Madras.
Local, state and federal agencies are advising motorists to plan for these delays accordingly.
Those with travel plans, including flights from the Redmond airport, are advised to seek alternate routes or make plans to avoid the procession by adjusting their arrival time at the airport. The heaviest congestion resulting from the procession is expected to occur sometime after 2 p.m.
