Wildish www.wildish.com Standard Paving construction crews will break ground on the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Bridge Replacement Project and Passing Lanes in Chemult on Monday, Sept. 13. Contractor crews anticipate working Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. throughout the project period. Occasional weekend and evening work is possible. Motorists can expect slight delays due to intermittent traffic control by flaggers.

UPPR Bridge Replacement
The UPPR Bridge is located on The Dalles – California Highway (U.S. 97) one mile north of Chemult. The replacement work is required to bring the bridge to current safety standards and to eliminate truck weight limits.

Beginning Sept. 13, crews will start construction of temporary detour lanes to the east of the existing UPRR Bridge. Contractors anticipate rerouting U.S. 97 traffic to the new, temporary detour lanes in October. Once traffic is rerouted, crews will begin replacement of the UPRR Bridge. Crews will stop work for the winter in late November and resume in March 2005. Wildish anticipates opening the new bridge to motorists by September 2005.

Passing Lanes
By late winter, motorists traveling on U.S. 97 between Klamath Falls and Bend will be able to use newly constructed passing lanes. Crews will begin construction of north- and southbound passing lanes on U.S. 97 near Chemult, on Sept. 13. Weather permitting; Wildish anticipates opening the new two-mile section of passing lanes in December. Motorists are reminded to slow down, use caution and expect shoulder closures with abrupt edges during construction of these lanes.

This project will increase the capacity of this section of highway and help reduce frequent, unsafe passing maneuvers that result in crashes.

OTIA Bridge Replacement Project
This $4.6 million project to increase traffic flow and safety is part of a $30.5 million contract awarded to Wildish Standard Paving to replace 11 bridges on U.S. 26, U.S. 97 and Oregon 224. The work is part of the Oregon Transportation Investment Act (OTIA) http://www.odot.state.or.us/otia/otia3index.htm funded program that was created to repair and replace Oregon’s cracked and aging bridges. These projects will enhance the safety, convenience and movement of traffic throughout the corridor.
