US 97: Expect closures on Fifth and Sixth streets in Redmond
Motorists driving through Redmond on US 97 (mile point 121) need to prepare for several night closures of the highway in September while crews for the Oregon Department of Transportation work to finish the Glacier-Highland (OR 126) Couplet Project. The entire project is scheduled to be finished at the end of November.
The first three-night closure will start at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11 and will affect southbound US 97 traffic (Sixth Street). Signed detours will lead motorists around the work taking place at the intersections of Sixth Street and Glacier Avenue and Sixth Street and Highland Avenue. This closure will take place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11; Tuesday, Sept. 12; and Wednesday, Sept. 13.
Starting at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, Fifth Street (US 97 northbound) will be closed for three nights to allow crews to work at the intersections of Glacier and Highland avenues. Northbound traffic will be directed to Sixth Street, with one lane for northbound traffic and one lane for southbound traffic. The closure will take place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 18; Tuesday, Sept. 19; and Wednesday, Sept. 20.
During both sets of closures, the highway will reopen at 6 a.m. Motorists should be prepared to drive on gravel during the day. Additional single-lane closures are likely to take place at night. The work is scheduled for night to help minimize impact to the traveling public and businesses in the area. Drivers are asked to slow down and watch for signs and flaggers or find alternate routes around the work zone.
The closures are part of the Glacier-Highland Couplet project. The purpose of the project is to alleviate congestion along Highland Avenue (OR 126) and add safety facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Highland Avenue now accommodates eastbound traffic and Glacier Avenue is used for westbound traffic. Other improvements include a pedestrian under-crossing, which will allow a safer passage for those crossing the highway between Sam Johnson Park and the future Ray Johnson Park, new sidewalks, ornamental lighting, and landscaping.
