Tumalo: US 20 Speed Limit Reduced to 50 mph
The speed limit for US 20 through Tumalo has been reduced to 50 miles-per-hour. The change comes after a speed zone investigation that was conducted by the Oregon Department of Transportation in response to input received from community members.
The area impacted by the change extends for a little more than a half a mile, from Fifth Street to the Deschutes River (MP 14.47-15.08) in Tumalo. New speed signs and advance warning signs have been posted.
“The new, reduced speed signs provide additional warning that there is activity going on in the community,” said Joel McCarroll, Region Traffic Manger for ODOT. “It reminds motorists to slow down and be aware that they may be encountering congestion, turning movements and drivers who are entering the highway.”
ODOT will continue to monitor the speeds through the area every two years to ensure that the proper speed limit is posted. Motorists are advised to slow down and be aware of the speed zone change in the area. Oregon State Police are increasing patrols in the Tumalo area.
Speeding kills more than 200 and injures more than 8,000 people each year in Oregon. The chances of dying or being seriously injured in a traffic crash doubles for every 10 mph you travel over 50 mph. This equals a 400 percent greater chance of dying in a crash while driving 70 mph than 50 mph.
“Slow down and obey the speed limit,” said McCarroll.
