U.S. 97 California Avenue Bridge to Reopen

KLAMATH FALLS—The U.S. 97 bridge over California Avenue (milepost 274.7) will reopen to traffic on Wednesday, Nov. 9, weather permitting. Crews will be working throughout the day, on Nov. 9, to stripe the new lanes and shift traffic. The work is not expected to create any additional delays for motorists.

Since March of this year, traffic has been routed to a one-lane detour bridge next to the California Avenue bridge, resulting in short delays.

After traffic is switched to the new bridge, crews will remove the detour structure. At the end of December, the work site will shut down for the winter. Work will resume in the spring when the temperature becomes warm enough to allow crews to complete final paving and striping of the roadway. The project is scheduled to be finished in June 2006.

The project is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s 10-year, $3 billion Oregon Transportation Investment Act (OTIA) program. During the next decade, OTIA will repair or replace hundreds of bridges, pave and maintain city and county roads, improve and expand interchanges, add new capacity to Oregon's highway system, and remove freight bottlenecks statewide. About 18 family-wage jobs are sustained for every $1 million spent on transportation construction in Oregon. Each year during the OTIA program, construction projects will sustain about 5,000 family-wage jobs.
