ODOT offers easy access to travel information
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) offers three easy ways to get travel information: via the internet, by phone, and on cable television.
Via the Internet
For travel conditions via the internet, visit http://www.tripcheck.com. TripCheck.com is ODOT’s travel information web site. In addition to text-based reports, the site offers camera images from urban areas, mountain passes, and other key locations throughout the state. Maps detail road conditions and trouble spots and include information about weather, road construction, maintenance work, and traffic incidents.
TripCheck.com has links to bus, airport, train, bicycle, and trucking information. A mileage calculator allows you to estimate distance and choose the most direct route. Other features include detailed information on scenic byways, safety rest areas, and SnoParks.
By Phone
Travelers in Oregon can dial 511 to access TripCheck road and weather information by phone.
You can select updated reports about driving conditions by highway, mountain pass, or major city from easy-to-use menus. The 511 system is user-friendly. The number is easy to remember and dial, and responds to voice as well as touch-tone commands.
Calls to 511 are local calls when dialed from a pay phone or wire line phone. Wireless phone users are responsible for airtime and roaming charges according to their wireless service contracts. ODOT encourages motorists to pull off the road and park in a safe area before using cell phones.
Most wireless companies in Oregon provide 511 service. If you cannot use 511, call toll-free (800) 977-ODOT (6368) for road and weather information. Outside Oregon, call (503) 588-2941. Oregon’s 511 service is part of a national travel information program. Whenever you travel in a state with 511, you can dial that number to get local travel information. As of September 2004, 21 states now offer 511 service.
On Cable TV
Bend-area viewers can check road and weather information on cable television.
BendBroadband customers can view road and weather information from selected cameras statewide as well as live video feeds on Channel 48. Channel 48 shows information in three parts. The upper half of the screen shows two views: still images from around the state on the left side and Bend-area full-motion video on the right side. The lower half displays full-motion video of three mountain passes and a scrolling road and weather report, along with emergency information for the region.
