Contractors working for the Oregon Department of Transportation will begin replacement of the Riley Bridge, located in Bend on U.S. 97 at mile point 135.05 the week of November 8. The entire project is expected to be completed by November 24.
Crews will close the southbound U.S. 97 off ramp at Exit 135A (Business District/Burns Exit) beginning on Tuesday, November 9, at 4:00 p.m. to facilitate the replacement work. The exit is expected to be reopened to motorists on Thursday, November 11 at 4:00 p.m., weather permitting.
Southbound motorists planning to use exit 135A will be rerouted using the following detour:
U.S. 97 to Robal Road
Robal Road to U.S. 20
U.S. 20 to U.S. 97 Business (3rd Street)
The closure of exit 135A and detour route give contractor crews the ability to remove and replace the bridge with a pipe in a shorter amount of time than if they were staging the construction under traffic. Additionally, the detour creates a safer work zone for crews (no traffic in the construction work zone) with minor impacts to the traveling public (faster construction schedule).
The aging Riley Bridge currently spans a short segment of a Swalley Irrigation District canal. Contractors will remove the bridge and portions of the abutments and pipe the canal below.
