HIGHWAY 35 CLOSURE UPDATE
The Oregon Department of Transportation has hired a contractor to begin repair work on Highway 35 this week. A large section of the highway has been closed since Tuesday, Nov. 7 when a severe storm sent huge amounts of water and debris down the White River and adjacent creeks, destroying the road in multiple locations.
The contractor, Tri-State Construction, Inc. from Portland, is currently mobilizing equipment, materials and personnel. Rising snow levels and heavy rains are forecast throughout the day Wednesday, Nov. 15. This combination of weather factors may increase water and debris flow from higher elevations and could delay the start of repair work due to safety concerns. ODOT has asked the contractor to work extended-hour shifts; that may evolve into crews working 24 hours at certain locations.
At this point, there is still no estimate when Highway 35 will reopen.
Currently, the highway is closed between the U.S. 26 junction, milepost 57.45, and Baseline Road, milepost 80.08. Within the 22+ mile closure area, approximately 10 miles of Highway 35 suffered significant damage to the road, bridges and drainage system.
Motorists should continue to use Interstate 84, U.S. 26 or U.S. 197 as alternate routes.
