Commission Approves Draft 25-Year Transportation Plan
for Public Review
The Oregon Transportation Commission on Wednesday approved the draft Oregon Transportation Plan and is now asking for public input on the state’s long-range multimodal transportation plan. Comments will be accepted until March 1, 2006. The public is invited to view the Plan online at http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/TD/TP/ortransplanupdate.shtml. A listing of public meetings scheduled around the state through February is also available online.
First developed in 1992, the Oregon Transportation Plan guides the development and investment in Oregon’s transportation system for the next 25 years. It addresses issues involving Oregon’s airports, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, highways, streets and roadways, pipelines, ports and waterways, public transportation and railroads.
In the next 25 years, Oregon’s transportation system faces an increasingly competitive global economy, growth in congestion and population, an uncertain global oil supply, global warming, security issues and inadequate funding. Analysis of projected revenues shows that providing for the future requires greater investment in the current system. Current resources do not provide for expected population and economic growth and do not maintain the system over the long-term. The plan details priorities for investment in Oregon’s transportation system and recommends policy directions that will help make the best use of funding while supporting the state’s economy and moving people and good safely throughout the state. Policy directions emphasize maximizing transportation assets, increasing the use of technology to enhance capacity and safety, and increasing state-local and public-private partnerships.
