Bridge project complete on US 97 north of Chemult
Oregon Department of Transportation contractor Wildish Standard Paving has finished work on the new Union Pacific Railroad overpass bridge on US 97, one-quarter mile north of Chemult.
Construction of the new bridge and roadway began in spring 2005. The new bridge opened to two-way traffic in October. The entire bridge project was completed in December.
UPRR bridge replacement
Crews built a new bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad to replace the old overpass on US 97. Traffic used the old bridge until the new structure was built. After the new bridge opened to traffic, the old structure was demolished.
The UPRR Bridge was replaced using the largest concrete beams ever installed on a single-span bridge in Oregon. The big beams allowed crews to span the railroad with minimal disturbance to the environment, the railway and highway traffic. It symbolized a new era in Oregon bridge-building.
This project is part of a $30.5 million ODOT contract awarded to Wildish Standard Paving to replace 11 bridges on US 26, US 97 and Oregon 224.
The OTIA III State Bridge Delivery Program is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation's 10-year, $3 billion Oregon Transportation Investment Act program. OTIA funds will repair or replace hundreds of bridges, pave and maintain city and county roads, improve and expand interchanges, add new capacity to Oregon's highway system, and remove freight bottlenecks statewide. About 18 family-wage jobs are sustained for every $1 million spent on transportation construction in Oregon. Each year during the OTIA program, construction projects will sustain about 5,000 family-wage jobs. Visit OTIA online at http://egov.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/OTIA/
