PENDLETON, Ore. - The Oregon Department of Transportation’s contractor High Desert Aggregate of Bend, Oregon, will begin paving work next week along the Umatilla-Mission Highway (Oregon Highway 331) between the Wildhorse Casino entrance and Interstate 84 at Exit 216. Paving is the final piece of ODOT’s $1.02 million safety and access improvement project that is widening a short section of highway to create designated turn lanes for businesses in the area. Motorists can expect delays of up to 20 minutes as crews lay down the new highway surface starting June 8. The paving work is expected to be completed by the end of next week with possible minor delays during the week of June 15 for pavement striping.
“The project is creating a safer environment for all travelers,” said ODOT Public Information Officer Tom Strandberg. “Crashes along highway sections with multiple accesses typically involve turning movements. The designated turn lanes will make it safer for visitors and the employees of these facilities.”
ODOT has been working closely with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation on the project, which is scheduled to be completed within the next couple weeks.
The project represents one of over 45 highway work zones that will be active throughout eastern Oregon this summer. ODOT reminds all travelers to slow down and pay extra attention in all highway work zones.
