Pavement Chip Seal Project on U.S. Hwy. 395 south of Pendleton
ODOT News - Region 5
PENDLETON, Ore. – Oregon Department of Transportation contractors have completed pavement chip seal work along a 17-mile section of the Heppner Highway, Oregon Highway 74,  between mile points 66 and 83. They are now working on U.S. 395 south of Pendleton between mile points 28-B and 36-B. Central Oregon Pavers out of Bend, Oregon, is constructing the project that will include chip sealing two additional sections of U.S. 395 between Battle Mountain and Fox. Motorists can expect loose rock on the roadway and up to 20-mintue delays during day and nighttime hours. Flaggers and pilot cars will direct traffic through the construction zones. Motorists are reminded to slow down, be mindful of loose gravel on the highway and drive with extra caution through the area. Depending on weather conditions, the project is expected to be completed by the end of June.

“Next week the contractor will be moving operations to chip seal the section between mile points 42-B to 50-B,” said ODOT Public Information Officer Tom Strandberg. “They will then move on to the final section between the Ritter Bridge at mile point 78-B and Fox at 91-B.”

Chip seal application consists of laying down emulsified oil and rock chips on the roadbed, then compressing the surface treatment with a roller. The chip seal applications help protect and extend the useful life of the existing highway surface.

“Later this summer the section of Oregon Highway 74 between Heppner and mile point 66 will be chip sealed as part of a separate contact,” said Strandberg. “Overall there are over 45 highway work zones identified in eastern Oregon and 140 total statewide. We at ODOT and our construction contractors greatly appreciate everyone’s patience as they drive through construction areas. Please slow down and pay extra attention through these cone zones.”
