Welcome to Region 5
Welcome to Region 5 Summer Highway Construction Update for Eastern Oregon
As the summer highway construction season continues in eastern Oregon, the Oregon Department of Transportation advises drivers to watch for construction workers and equipment, and to drive with extra caution when they see orange signs and traffic cones ahead. Motorists are also reminded that traffic fines double in work zones.

"Here in eastern Oregon there are nearly 40 work zones that could be active during the summer months along Interstate 84 and numerous U.S. and state routes," said ODOT Public Information Officer Tom Strandberg. "When you see those orange signs and cones ahead please take extra precautions by slowing down, watching for work crews and allowing additional room between you and the vehicle ahead."

Distracted drivers are a major cause of work zone crashes so stay off cell phones and refrain from changing the radio station or interacting with anything but the road ahead.

"It only takes split second for a work zone tragedy to happen when you are traveling at highway speeds," said Strandberg. "If it was your son, daughter or family member working alongside the road, think of how you would want others to drive."

Listed below are highway work zones and anticipated traffic impacts that eastern Oregon travelers may encounter this summer. The numbers next to each project are referenced to the attached pdf ODOT Eastern Oregon 2008 Summer Construction Map. This project listing and map for Eastern Oregon is also on the Web at http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/REGION5/ . For a listing of ODOT Summer Construction projects across the entire state, visit http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/COMM/2008_conmap.shtml on the Web.

"Construction start and end dates are estimates and may change,: said Strandberg. "The main thing is to keep your eyes peeled for orange and slow down."
Current Topics
I-84 Rolling Slowdowns south-east of Baker City
Burnt River Canyon
Motorists may experience temporary slowdowns on Interstate 84 over the next couple months 30 miles southeast of Baker City. ODOT contractors will occasionally use pilot cars to slow traffic to 30 miles-per-hour near mile point 336 to accommodate excavation and blasting alongside the freeway. The slow downs create a window of time when no cars will be in the area so that blasting operations can be safely performed. The work is part of a project that includes realigning two sharp corners and improving safety along the 12-mile stretch of winding freeway known as Burnt River Canyon.

ODOT estimates a half-dozen rolling slow downs per week could take place over the next couple months, but that no more than two are expected in any one 24-hour period. Travelers are advised to watch for traffic control signs and pay extra attention when driving through this and all construction work zones.
Freeway on-ramp at Rye Valley interchange to close for construction
Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation will close the eastbound Interstate 84 on-ramp at the Rye Valley interchange (Exit 340) on Wednesday, June 18 for bridge replacement work. The ramp will remain closed until October.

Signs will direct motorists on Dixie Creek Road and Rye Valley Lane headed to eastbound I-84 to drive west on I-84 for two miles, take Exit 338 (Lookout Mountain Road), cross under I-84, then proceed eastbound on I-84.

From July to September, crews will occasionally reduce I-84 traffic near the interchange to one lane in each direction. The temporary lane closures will allow workers to repair the freeway bridge over the Burnt River, east of the Exit 340 overpass.
News Releases
State Highway Projects continue in Grant / Baker and Harney counties
While some summer highway construction projects in the area are nearly completed, others are scheduled to ramp up soon in and around the Grant, Baker and Harney county areas. The Oregon Department of Transportation reminds motorists to be extra cautious during the busy highway construction season and to watch out for crews working along several highway sections. Construction activities and anticipated traffic impacts include the following project sites. Construction start dates are tentative and may change.
Public Open House Meeting Scheduled July 16 for Heppner
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will host a Public Open House Meeting July 16 regarding the Court Street and Willow Creek Bridge Project to be constructed in Heppner in 2009. The project will include bridge repair work, highway widening, new sidewalks and school crossing improvements. Additional work will include flattening the curve at the Stansbury intersection, constructing drainage facilities for the roadway and other safety improvements.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 pm at the Columbia Basin Electric Co-op facility in Heppner, 171 W Linden Way, Heppner. Local community members and other interested parties are encouraged to attend.

This is the third public open house for this project. During the meeting local residents, community members and other interested parties will have an opportunity to hear information and ask questions regarding these construction activities.

The estimated $2 million project, currently in the design phase, will improve traffic safety for school children, pedestrians and all motorists.

More information about this project is available by contacting ODOT Public Information Officer Tom Strandberg at 541-963-1330, or ODOT Project Leader Tim Rynearson at 541-963-1364.
High water damages OR Hwy. 82 guardrail
Wallowa River
High water in the Wallowa River has washed out part of the embankment along Oregon Highway 82 east of the town of Wallowa. Oregon Department of Transportation crews worked last night to stabilize the river bank and are continuing today to repair the damaged shoulder near mile point 49.15. Flaggers will be controlling single lane traffic through the area. Motorists may experience minor delays and are advised to plan a little extra travel time along this route.

ODOT plans to open the highway to two-lane travel for the holiday weekend, but may need to return Tuesday to finish up the work next week.
