State Highway Projects Gear Up in Harney and Malheur Counties
ODOT News - Region 5
June 8, 2009

BURNS, Ore. – Construction work is beginning on two major state highway and bridge projects this week in Harney and Malheur counties. One is a paving project in Harney County along U.S. 20 between the Lake County line and Hines. The other is a bridge replacement project 15 miles north of Vale on U.S. 26 in Malheur County. Along with these new projects, several other highway construction zones in the area remain active and others are expected later this summer. The Oregon Department of Transportation and the Oregon State Police remind travelers to slow down and drive with extra caution in all work zones, where traffic fines are double the amount.

“This will be one of our busiest construction seasons as ODOT projects help put Oregonians to work,” said ODOT Public Information Officer Tom Strandberg. “Please drive carefully and be on the look out for flaggers, crews and equipment. Many people may not realize that in work zone related crashes it is the motorist or their passengers that are more likely to be injured or killed. We don’t want anyone to be hurt along the highways, so please watch out in those cone zones.”
