Local communications systems gain from depot closure
Radio project staff visited the Walker Point site in Lane County in December.
Ten years ago, the U.S. Army established a chemical depot in Umatilla County for the purposes of destroying chemical weapons. The Army also established and installed a communications system to keep the local populace advised.

As the Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program draws to its planned closure this year, FEMA is turning over 14 sites and related assets to a group of local and state bodies for continued use in the interest of public safety.

Oregon will acquire a number of those assets for ODOT use, including communications sites and equipment. Learn more in this month's feature article.
