ODOT Maintenance is consistently out in front, working to minimize impacts to Oregon's natural resources and integrating the key priniciples and goals of ODOT's Sustainability Plan.

| Environmental Management System |
|
ODOT's Maintenance Yard Environmental Management System (EMS) was initiated in 2005 to provide best management practices for the storage, use and handling, and disposal of all materials used and found at maintenance yards. Since the EMS program was introduced, it has become part of standard operating procedures at all ODOT Maintenance Yards. The EMS is a cornerstone of the Maintenance commitment in the ODOT Sustainability Plan. Maintenance yards are now cleaner and neater, and ultimately safer due to the implementation of the EMS program.

| Integrated Vegetation Management Program |

The ODOT Vegetation Section provides functional direction, planning, and overall monitoring of landscape maintenance and roadside vegetation management programs. Since 1991, ODOT has formally implemented an Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) program.

ODOT is implementing plans to reduce the amount of herbicides used to manage the highway for safety and for structure preservation, and evaluate how that reduction affects highway management. In fact, when comparing 2009 to 2004, ODOT reduced the amount of herbicides used west of the Cascades by 58%, representing a 26% statewide reduction.
