Procurement Office and Sustainability
Sustainable Office Supplies
As a large state agency, ODOT employees use a lot of office supplies, it’s just a part of doing business, but there are things we can do to minimize the environmental and economic impacts of our office supplies usage. The ODOT Procurement Office is helping the agency find ways to reduce the impacts of these supplies from eliminating extra packaging to the use of recycled content paper to reducing the number of supply deliveries per week.
These are just a few of the great initiatives that ODOT office buildings can participate in. And the Procurement Office is constantly looking at other ways to integrate sustainability into how we do business, so stay tuned for future initiatives!

Sustainable Tote Program
Starting in 2010, ODOT established an agreement with OfficeMax to implement and participate in the OfficeMax Sustainable Tote Delivery Program. Instead of getting deliveries in individual packages, OfficeMax fills these reusable totes with supplies and the OfficeMax drivers pick up the empty totes on the next scheduled delivery.
Delivery Scheduling
Some of ODOT’s office buildings, including those on the Region 2 compound, have switched to a once a week delivery schedule from OfficeMax. Instead of having deliveries everyday for a couple of office supply items, the buildings have selected one day a week for all OfficeMax deliveries. This reduces emission impacts of frequent, daily deliveries.
Recycled Paper
As an agency we use a lot of paper, and while we are developing and implementing some great strategies to reduce the amount of paper we use, paper is still a need for our business. In order to help minimize the impacts of using virgin paper (paper with no recycled materials in it) we encourage the use of recycled content paper. Some may think recycled paper doesn’t look as good or that it may jam their copiers, and that it’s not worth the expense to try it. However, paper quality has come a long way. Recycled paper is now made to be as functional and versatile as the non-recycled sheets your office currently uses.
With the help of OfficeMax, the Procurement Office is able to offer your office samples of 30% and 100% recycled paper. If you are interested in testing either or both types of paper email Elizabeth Clark at: elizabeth.lw.clark@odot.state.or.us, provide your name and address and indicate which percentage you wish to try (30%, 100% or both). See how well recycled paper can work for your office!
