| ODOT SPR Research Program |
|
The research portion of ODOT’s State Planning and Research (SPR) program supports research, development and technology transfer (RD&T) activities relating to highway, public transportation and intermodal transportation systems. Research is defined as "a systematic controlled inquiry involving analytical and experimental activities which primarily seek to increase the understanding of underlying phenomena", or in simpler terms it’s to answer a question, solve a problem or increase knowledge. Development means "the translation of research results into prototype materials, devices, techniques, or procedures for the practical solution of a problem." Technology Transfer means "those activities that lead to the adoption of a new technique or product by users and involves dissemination, demonstration, training and other activities that lead to eventual innovation."

| ODOT Experimental Features |
|
The experimental features program provides a means of utilizing proprietary products or non-standard methods on Federal-Aid projects on an experimental basis. The program allows federal funds to be used in the construction, repair and/or replacement of the product. Designers who want to use the product in the construction plans generally submit proposals.

| ODOT State Research Program |
|
The state research program provides support for research, development and implementation of transportation related activities that do not qualify for other funds. The state program allows the Research Section to assist other ODOT sections with small research, development or technology transfer activities.

|
| Transportation Pooled Fund |
|
States and other interested organizations may pool their funds to address common research interests under the transportation pooled fund program. This program, administered by FHWA, designates a lead state to manage the project. Projects approved by FHWA for pooled fund status may use 100% Federal SPR funding. Pooled fund projects are encouraged to avoid duplication, and they provide a way for states to tackle research efforts that are too expensive large for individual states. A web site has been developed for pooled fund business. The web site (www.pooledfund.org) can be used to post a solicitation for a new pooled fund project, make financial commitments to pooled fund projects, post quarterly progress reports or obtain information about the status of a pooled fund project.

| NCHRP - Research |
|
The National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) focuses on complex problems of wide interest to highway authorities, especially those that are best studied through a coordinated program of cooperative research. It is designed to solve specific problems experienced by practitioners in the operation and planning functions of state highway departments. The four main topic categories are (1) planning, administration and environmental (2) design, (3) materials, construction and maintenance and (4) operations and safety. The program is administered by AASHTO through the Transportation Research Board (TRB).

| NCHRP - Synthesis |
|
The synthesis program provides a summary report on the best knowledge available or best practices on specific subjects. Attempts are made to make specific recommendations where appropriate but without the detailed directions usually found in handbooks or design manuals.

| TCRP - Research |
|
Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) provides the transit industry innovative near-term solutions to meet demands. Scope includes planning, service configuration, equipment, facilities, operations, human resources, maintenance, policy and administrative practices. Emphasis is given to research benefiting end-users: transit agencies, service providers and suppliers. The Transit Development Corporation (TDC) through the TCRP. Oversight and Project Selection (TOPS) committee administers the program.

| IDEA (NCHRP - TRANSIT - ITS) |
|
The Ideas Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) program explores the feasibility of unproven technical concepts, novel applications of proven technical concepts or advances that have not yet been tried or tested for application in transportation practice. The IDEA program focuses on high-payoff concepts, products, systems, tools or techniques that accelerate the development of advanced technologies, methods, or processes for surface and intermodal transportation systems. FHWA and AASHTO support the NCHRP-IDEA program. The TRANSIT-IDEA program is supported by TCRP (through FTA), NAS (through TRB) and APTA (through TDC). FHWA, NHTSA and FRA support the ITS-IDEA program.
