Text Box: Answer to What’s Wrong With These Pictures
—— From page 4
This photo of a “flagger” was recently taken on a suburban city street. Let’s focus on the flagger tools he is using; in particular, what constitutes his flagger paddle. It appears the so-called paddle has been fabricated from some round red object; perhaps a red Frisbee or a garbage can lid. Some effort must have been put into making the tool, and that effort must have resulted in some costs. Were the costs worth it? In my opinion – Definitely NOT. Let’s look at some basic problems with the actual tool being used.
It does not comply with Section 6E.03, Hand-Signaling Devices, 2009 MUTCD. Do you see either a standard STOP or SLOW face? Do you see ANY letters? The object is not a minimum of 18” wide, with letters at least 6” high. It is not retro-reflective.
The tool has been mounted much too low to be easily seen by approaching or stopped traffic, even if that traffic could understand what the tool was being used for. Flagger paddles are best mounted on a handle such that the bottom of the paddle is above the flagger’s eye level, so the paddle does not obstruct the flagger’s vision.
Use of any tool such as this one may be hilarious, but it is not professional and does not contribute to basic work zone safety, whatever the circumstances.

Distracted Driving: Real Accidents, Real Stories 2

Currently, 20% of all crashes are related to distracted driving. In this powerful production, gut wrenching and life changing testimonials are illustrated to the audience. Covered in this film are how conversations can become a distraction to the driver and create a moment of inattention. Also included are two tragic stories of people and their families whose lives were impacted with fatalities due to the driver using a cell phone and the other using a navigation system while driving. Information is presented throughout the program to teach the professional driver how to choose alternative behaviors to avoid becoming a part of this growing statistic.

Drowsy Driving: It's Your Wake Up Call

This incredibly loaded program is filled with important information for the professional drivers who travels both short and long distances as a part of their workday. While addressing the 100,000+ crashes that occur each year from drowsy driving, the viewer will be taught on how to effectively identify and manage driver fatigue. Also covered in the film are; lack of sleep, stress, diet, medications, micro naps, night driving and grave yard shifts and the sleepy feeling when returning to the work after lunch.

The T2 lending library is a free loan-by-mail lending program to local government agencies such as counties, cities, tribal governments, road districts, and transit providers.  Materials are loaned for 2 weeks from the date of initial mailing.  More time may be approved by calling or emailing the office with your request.  Due to copyright infringement laws, most materials may not be duplicated.  Your only cost for using the lending library is the return postage.  Although not required, we suggest the materials be returned by UPS ground or a similar service, so that it can be tracked in case of being lost in the mail. However, you are free to also return borrowed materials by first class mail.

We try to regularly add new DVDs to the lending library, and more will be added soon.  For information on what new videos are available, visit http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/ TD/TP_T2/Pages/NewAdditionsToLibrary.aspx or call Rebekah Clack at (503) 986-2855.
