What is Weight Watchers?
Weight Watchers offers weight-loss services and products founded on a scientifically based approach to weight management. Based on the philosophy that successful weight loss is achieved through the attainment of a series of realistic goals, Weight Watchers offers multi-dimensional ways to learn how to achieve and then maintain a healthy body weight for the long term. Weight Watchers incorporates healthful eating, physical activity, behavior modification, and for those who attend our meetings, a supportive atmosphere. Weight Watchers affirms that to lose weight safely and sensibly, a person must learn to eat more healthfully, increase physical activity, and handle the challenges encountered in the process of changing behavior.

Why are Kaiser Permanente & ODS offering Weight Watchers as part of their OEBB medical benefits?

Weight Watchers toll-free numbers do have Spanish-speaking representatives. If one is not available at the time of the call, the call will be transferred to voicemail where a message will be taken. A Spanish-speaking representative will return the call as soon as possible during business hours.

Does Weight Watchers have evidence of its effectiveness in the long-term?

According to an independent review of commercial weight-loss programs that was published in the January 2005 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine, Weight Watchers is the only weight-loss company with scientific research to demonstrate the efficacy of its program. While several studies on Weight Watchers have been conducted, the best known is a randomized, two-year, prospective, multi-center clinical trial (April 9, 2003 Journal of the American Medical Association) comparing people attending Weight Watchers meetings to people following a self help diet regimen. People who attended Weight Watchers meetings lost 3 times more weight than those who were trying to lose weight on their own.

More information is available on the Weight Watchers website.

At Work Meetings

Can I get more details on At Work meetings?
AT WORK MEETINGS*†

A Weight Watchers leader comes to your workplace to provide experienced guidance at weekly meetings that fit perfectly into the busy workday. You benefit from the proven advantage of group support for successful weight loss with coworkers who understand the workplace environment best. If you choose this option, you will be enrolled for your first 13-week program and basic membership materials. There is no registration fee.

Employees, early retirees, and their dependents age 10 and up who are covered on an OEBB medical plan receive At Work meetings at no-cost. (Some AtWork meeting locations may be restricted to employees only.) You are eligible for up to four 13-week programs per plan year (Oct 1 - Sept. 30), but you must provide proof of participation in 10 of the 13 sessions to participate in a subsequent series at no-cost. This option is available only in participating areas in the U.S. and minimum enrollment is required to have a meeting at your workplace.

*Available only in participating areas in the U.S.
Minimum enrollment required.

What is the minimum number of participants required to start an At Work meeting?
The minimum group size is 15 participants for an At Work meeting. If you are interested in this option, but don’t know if your location can meet the minimum requirement, call Weight Watchers at 866-531-8170 (or in Lane, Douglas, Coos, Curry, Jackson, or Klamath Counties call 800-651-6000) and express your interest.  Weight Watchers will track interest in your location and let you know when the minimum has been met and a meeting is being organized.

How long is the typical At Work meeting?
At Work meetings are typically less than an hour.
What is the role of an on-site coordinator?
The role of the on-site coordinator is to:
1. Insure that the minimum number of participants are signed up in order to schedule a series
2. Reserve the room for the meetings
3. Make sure the room is set up appropriately
4. Work with the Weight Watchers leader to organize the group
5. Direct associates to the meeting location, answer questions about meeting times, and refer associates to the appropriate Weight Watchers toll-free number if necessary.
6. Provide updates to the Weight Watchers leader about meeting location changes

If two or more participants wish to be co-coordinators, or rotate the role over time, these are both easy ways to share the responsibility and ensure successful meetings. Just be clear about who will do what, and communicate that to your meeting leader. If you don’t have a meeting leader yet, call Weight Watchers to make arrangements.

How do I find out if an At Work meeting is available at my workplace?
Call Weight Watchers to express your interest.  Even if your workplace doesn’t currently have the minimum number of participants, you will be adding one more to the list and Weight Watchers will contact you once the minimum has been reached. You are under no obligation to participate should you no longer desire to at that point.

You can also view the latest list of At Work meeting locations by clicking these links:

When using the Excel document, you can use filters to show only the meetings you would like to see. For example, you can click the drop-down arrow next to the header "City" and select only those cities convenient for you. To change your filter selections, simply click the drop-down arrow again. (A little funnel will be next to the arrow if that category is currently filtered.) To remove a filter, click the drop-down arrow and click on the "(Select All)" option.

The pdf document shows all the meetings in alphabetical order by city.
What if no At Work meeting* is available at my workplace?
By calling Weight Watchers you can learn about other options such as community meetings near you or the online subscription.

*Available only in participating areas in the U.S.

If I miss my At Work meeting, can I weigh in and attend a community meeting?
Yes. You just need to bring your current Membership Book.

Community Meetings

Can I get more details about local community meetings?
LOCAL MEETING VOUCHERS

With this option you have the flexibility of attending Weight Watchers meetings in your community when and where it suits you best. You benefit from an experienced leader and group support from your fellow members.

Eligible OEBB employees, early retirees, and their dependents age 10 and up who are covered on an OEBB medical plan may sign up for Local Meeting vouchers at no cost by calling Weight Watchers. Weight Watchers staff will verify your eligibility and mail local meeting vouchers directly to you (available only in participating areas in the U.S.) You will receive member materials when you attend meetings.

How are the vouchers used?
Upon receipt of the Local Meeting vouchers, you will select the meeting location of your choice (Weight Watchers staff can inform you of meeting locations near you when you call). At the Registration desk, you should let the staff person know that you have already purchased vouchers, and hand in your completed Registration Card as well as one voucher for that week. No registration fee is required.

How much time should I plan on spending at a Weight Watchers meeting?
Your group meeting, led by a trained Weight Watchers leader, will last approximately 30-45 minutes. However, at the end of your first group meeting, there will be an orientation for new members called the “Getting Started Session.” This session will last an additional 30 minutes.

What can I expect at a Weight Watchers meeting?
At Weight Watchers meetings you’ll learn to follow the PointsPlus program. You’ll get guidance, strategies and tips, plus:
  • A Leader who has lost weight with Weight Watchers
  • A supportive and caring environment
  • Access to helpful tools, guides, books, recipes
  • A “Getting Started” session for new members

At your first meeting, the staff will give you a private and confidential weigh-in. Your leader will help you set your first weight-loss goal. Starting with 5% of your weight can be an attainable first step.

What are the requirements for becoming a Weight Watchers meetings member?
To become a Weight Watchers meetings member, you must:

1. Weigh at least 5 pounds more than the minimum healthy weight for your height, according to the Weight Watchers healthy weight ranges.
2. Be at least 17 years old. (For those between the ages of 10 and 17, written medical permission is required. Children under the age of 10 are not permitted to join.)
3. Not be pregnant.
4. Not have an active medical diagnosis of bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa.
5. Provide a Local Meeting voucher or pay a weekly meetings fee.
6. Sign a Health Release on the Registration Card.

Do I need to purchase Weight Watchers Local Meeting vouchers to attend a Weight Watchers meeting in my community?
No, you may register and pay for a single meeting at any Weight Watchers meeting location but you will not receive the benefit provided under your OEBB medical plan unless you request the vouchers through the toll-free number and explain at that time that you are an OEBB member and wish to use your medical benefit.

What can I do if when I call to purchase Local Meeting vouchers I’m told my local area is not participating?
Although Weight Watchers has approximately 4,800 meeting locations, there are some areas that do not participate in the Local Meeting vouchers offering. However, their Customer Service representative will direct you on how to find a meeting in your area. They can also provide details about the Online subscription and enroll you in that option if you wish. Weight Watchers may add new participating areas at any time, so please continue to check back with them at each renewal if you would prefer to attend meetings.

How long does it take to receive the vouchers?
You should allow 7-10 business days to receive your Local Meeting vouchers. If they do not arrive within that time, call Weight Watchers to follow up.

Can I share vouchers with a friend?
No, the vouchers are nontransferable. Only you will be able to use your Local Meeting vouchers.

What happens if I lose the vouchers?
Vouchers are not replaceable if lost or stolen. Protect them as though they were cash and keep them in a secure place.

How can I find a Weight Watchers meeting location close to me and the times of the meetings?
To find a meeting location and time convenient for you call Weight Watchers or visit www.WeightWatchers.com/findmeeting. Keep in mind if you use the website, you still must call Weight Watchers and explain that you are an OEBB member to utilize your OEBB benefit. You will not be reimbursed if you pay Weight Watchers directly.

How soon do I have to start once I purchase the vouchers?
You should begin using your Local Meeting vouchers as soon as you receive them, and continue to attend your meetings regularly. The vouchers are designed for you to attend for consecutive weeks. Check the expiration date on your vouchers because they cannot be redeemed after the expiration date.

Online Subscription

Can I get more details about the Online subscription?
ONLINE SUBSCRIPTION

As an alternative to attending meetings, you can follow Weight Watchers step-by-step online, with interactive tools and resources like a weight tracker, progress charts, restaurant guides, and thousands of recipes and meal ideas to help you stay on track. Plus, connect with our free Online community, day or night, for inspiration and motivation. Anyone age 17 and up enrolled in an OEBB medical plan can enroll in the Online subscription at no cost by calling the Weight Watchers National Call Center at 866-531-8170.

Can I do both the Online subscription and attend meetings at the same time?
Your OEBB benefit covers only one of the delivery models at a time, either At Work meetings, community meetings, or the Online subscription. While attending meetings, Weight Watchers provides many online tools to support your weight loss efforts, but these are different from the “Online subscription”. The Online subscription is designed to replicate the materials presented in meetings, as an alternative way to participate.  There would not be a reason to do both at the same time.

How do I access the Weight Watchers Online subscription at no cost?
Call the Weight Watchers National Call Center at 866-531-8170. Weight Watchers staff will verify your eligibility and give you an access code with further instructions.

After registering for the Online subscription, how can I access it?
Once you have registered for the Weight Watchers Online subscription, you may access it by going directly to WeightWatchers.com and logging in. Once you log on to www.weightwatchers.com, you will be recognized as a returning registered online subscriber. The easiest way to continue to access www.weightwatchers.com is to save it as a “favorite” within your browser.

How do I renew my Online subscription using my OEBB medical benefit?
You must participate in at least 10 weeks of your 3-month online subscription in order to renew for another fully-paid 3-month subscription. Follow the simple instructions on the Online Proof of Particpation Form.

How do I get help with the Weight Watchers Online subscription?
Help is available in the upper right-hand corner of every page on WeightWatchers.com. Using this “help” button, you can email your specific question to one of seven areas of inquiry: subscription process, tools and features, technical support, login help, start weight changes, cancellations, and Weight Watchers On-the-Go. The typical response time is within 24 hours. You can also call the Weight Watchers National Call Center at 866-531-8170 during their regular hours of operation.

More Details - The Weight Watchers Program & Philosophy

What is the Weight Watchers PointsPlus® program?
The PointsPlus program is the current foundation of Weight Watchers and is a fresh approach to weight loss. It builds on the best elements of previous Weight Watchers plans and incorporates the latest scientific research—in addition to in-depth insights from successful members.

What is the Weight Watchers philosophy on exercising?
Weight Watchers recommendations about the types and amount of physical activity to be included are consistent with those of the scientific community. You are encouraged to reduce sedentary behavior and progressively increase activity. Based on a proprietary formula that includes body weight and duration and intensity of exercise, all types of physical activity can be assigned a PointsPlus value. There is guidance on how to move more, a firming and toning guide, and advice on how to add more activity when you’re ready to do so.

What are Weight Watchers Tools For Living?
Weight Watchers believes in the need for behavioral change. Weight Watchers knows that there are personal challenges encountered throughout the weight-loss process. To meet this need, Weight Watchers Tools for Living were developed to teach specific skills that enhance your ability to meet and overcome these challenges. As part of the Weight Watchers meetings, discussions on real topics— such as staying motivated, acting as role models in our families, and managing stress—offer valuable insight and provide the reassurance that no one has to do it alone.

Lifetime Membership

What is Lifetime Membership?
Lifetime Membership is a privilege you receive after completing your weight-loss journey as a Weight Watchers meetings member. You receive a Lifetime Membership recognition award when you:

1. Achieve a weight goal that is within the Weight Watchers healthy weight ranges (or a healthy weight determined by your physician) and are at least five pounds less than your initial weight, and
2. Have been on the Weight Watchers maintenance phase for six consecutive weeks as a current, paid meetings member and are no more than two pounds above your weight goal at the end of that period.

As a Lifetime Member, we encourage you to attend Weight Watchers meetings in your local area and anywhere in the world. There is no charge as long as you weigh in once a month at the first meeting you attend and you’re no more than two pounds above your weight goal. Don’t forget to show your Lifetime Membership book.

I am a Lifetime Member who has gained weight back. Can I return to Weight Watchers as a Lifetime Member?
Yes. If you want to return to meetings as a Lifetime Member, simply call Weight Watchers like any other participant in the OEBB plan. Tell them at the time you call that you want to return to meetings as a Lifetime Member and they will give you further instructions.  You may be asked to show proof of Lifetime Membership at your first meeting by bringing your Lifetime Membership book or Lifetime Member number.

What if I have lost my Lifetime Member number?
Call Weight Watchers and explain that you have lost your Lifetime Member number. Weight Watchers staff will assist you. In some cases you may be asked to fill out a Lifetime Membership Information Request Form.  In these cases, allow 14 days for the form to be processed and to receive a response.

Renewal - Beyond the First Session

Download a 3-page interactive PDF with enrollment and renewal instructions.

Is there a minimum participation requirement to get another session paid for by my OEBB medical plan?
Yes, you must participate in at least 10 weeks of your first session to get another session paid for under your medical plan.

What if I didn't meet the 10-week participation minimum?  Is there a way to continue the program and get another session covered in the future?
You can self-pay for a session (a “session” means a bundled package of 13 meetings, one meeting per week over 13 weeks) by calling the same Weight Watchers toll-free number you used to enroll previously. If you attend at least 10 of the 13 meetings during that self-paid session, as long as you are still enrolled in an OEBB medical plan, you can provide proof of participation from your self-paid session and you will again qualify for a no-cost session under your OEBB medical plan.

How do I prove I participated for at least 10 weeks and continue at no cost?
For At Work meetings or Local Community meetings:
You will have a "pocket guide" showing each week you attended. Show this to your meeting leader. They will validate your attendance and give you a special OEBB single-use renewal certificate that is coded by Weight Watchers with a non-reusable and non-transferable access code for one renewal only. Call the Weight Watchers toll-free number and provide your unique access code to enroll in your next session at no cost.

For Weight Watchers Online subscription:
You will capture a "screen print" of your online Weight Tracker (see "screen print" instructions below) and submit it to Weight Watchers via fax or email along with the Online Proof of Participation Form. Detailed instructions are on the form. You will receive a validation email with a new access code. Note: You will need to cancel your current online subscription before the end of the third month and re-enroll with your new access code. Weight Watchers representatives will be able to assist you with this process -- just call 866-531-8170.

How do I capture a "screen print" of my online Weight Tracker?
The following instructions were copied from Wikipedia.com:

Built-in screenshot functionality
  • Mac OS X
On Mac OS X, a user can take a screenshot of an entire screen by pressing Command-Shift-3, or of a chosen area of the screen by Command-Shift-4. (Note: the screenshot will automatically be saved as a file on your desktop, which you can attach to your email or open and print for faxing.) A user cannot capture the screen while DVD Player is running.
  • Microsoft Windows
On Microsoft Windows, pressing Print Screen captures a screenshot of the entire desktop and places it in the clipboard, while Alt + Print Screen captures only the active window. Once captured, the screenshot must be pasted from the clipboard into a separate program, such as Paint or Word, in order to be viewed or saved.
How do I cancel my Online subscription so I can renew at no cost?
Log on to your account, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click the “contact us” link. Choose “cancel my account” and follow the instructions.

Why do I need to cancel my Online subscription and re-enroll if I met the participation requirement?
The Weight Watchers Online subscription currently requires valid credit card information to be entered along with your access code. The access code takes care of the first three months covered by insurance, but if that subscription is not cancelled before the end of the three months, the system will automatically renew your subscription and charge your credit card for the following month. OEBB is working with Weight Watchers on potentially changing the system so this may not be necessary in the future, but for now, this is the process WeightWatchers.com requires.

What happens if I lose my renewal certificate?
Renewal certificates are not replaceable if lost or stolen. Protect them as though they were cash and keep them in a secure place.

Can someone else use my renewal certificate if I don't need it?
No, your renewal certificate was specifically assigned to you as validation that you personally completed the requirement and is non-transferable. Think of it like a doctor's appointment – no one else can use your insurance. This is a medical benefit paid for by your insurance plan and you are the only person allowed to use it.
I fulfilled the participation requirement and want to continue with Weight Watchers for another session, but I’d like to take a little time off in between. Do my sessions need to be continuous in order for my medical plan to pay for the renewal?
The sessions do not need to be continuous; however, the best weight loss results are obtained without taking "breaks", so please consider these other options before deciding to take time off:

1)   At Work passes and community meeting vouchers are accepted at most community meetings worldwide, so often-times you could keep participating even while traveling.

2)   If in-person meetings aren’t possible, you may want to keep your momentum going with the Online subscription rather than taking time off.

We hope you’ll capitalize on your own success and stick with it until you achieve your goal!

Should circumstances require you to take some time off between sessions, submit your proof of participation and get your renewal certificate/code as soon as you complete your session. Then, although it’s not the optimal choice for weight loss, you may wait a while before using that certificate/code to start another session. As long as you are still covered on an OEBB medical plan when you start the next session, you are still eligible for the benefit.
