Oregon Health Authority
Vision

Our vision is a healthier Oregon through collaborative health services research and evaluation.

The Oregon Health Research & Evaluation Collaborative (OHREC) is unique in that it is not a designated state agency; but rather it is a collaborative effort of Oregon Health Policy & Research, Oregon Medical Assistance Programs and the health services' research community in Oregon.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to deliver relevant, timely, evidence-based results and analysis to improve health, health care and health policy. Through its projects and professional development opportunities OHREC strives to improve the quality and efficiency of health services research by an open exchange of expertise and resources.

Vision and Mission In-depth
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
  • Research is conducted by health services researchers from Oregon's universities, state and county agencies, advocacy organizations, and a variety of other stakeholders such as policy makers and representatives of managed care and hospital systems.
  • OHREC is also committed to professional development opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and medical student interns to foster a relationship between academia and policy.

Timely and Relevant Work that Impacts Health and Policy
  • The unique organizational model of the collaborative reduces information gaps and informs both policy and program decisions by communicating quality, non-partisan, and timely information.
  • OHREC provides both policy makers and the public access to clearly presented non-partisan health services research through published research briefs and sponsored public forums where researchers discuss and present their findings.
  • We provide information to assist the administration of Oregon Medicaid and similar programs as well as for Oregon Gubernatorial and Legislative review of Oregon Health Plan program impacts.

Improving the Quality and Efficiency of Health Services Research
  • Through our collaborations, we maximize our available resources, expand perspectives on issues, and foster innovation.
  • Researchers benefit from professional development opportunities through knowledge exchange and peer-to-peer collaboration.

Support for OHREC

The Office for Oregon Health Policy and Research (OHPR), under its Robert Wood Johnson Foundation State Coverage Initiatives Grant, formed the collaborative in December of 2002.

Nicole Olson, in partnership with OHPR and other OHREC stakeholders, is taking the lead in supporting the revitalization and re-launching of OHREC and it's new website. The website is currently in development and will be available in fall 2011 at www.ohrec.org. Ms. Olson's position is supported by The Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation.

Example of OHREC’s Work

The Oregon Health Study is an example of excellent research opportunity that formed through OHREC. The Oregon Health Study is a landmark, state-wide study examining the causal effect of health insurance on individuals’ access to and utilization of care, its effect on family finances, and ultimately its role in improving the health of a population. It is being conducted by an interdisciplinary team of researchers and policy makers in the fields of public health, economics, sociology, social work, medicine, and health policy.
