Margaret S. Van Vliet
Margaret S. Van Vliet was recently named Director of Oregon Housing and Community Services by Governor John Kitzhaber. Along with more than two decades of experience, she brings to the position a passion about the importance of affordable housing and a deep commitment to the values of community development and social justice.

A fourth generation native Oregonian, Margaret grew up in Bend and graduated from Linfield College. She began her career in banking, advancing to the position of Vice President of Community Development Lending and then assuming leadership of Network for Oregon Affordable Housing, the non-profit bank consortium that specializes in affordable housing finance. Her resume also encompasses service on non-profit boards and commissions, a policy post in the governor’s office, and several years as deputy executive director and chief operating officer of Oregon’s largest public housing authority. Ms. Van Vliet’s continuing education includes certificates from two executive education programs of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government: Achieving Excellence, (run jointly with NeighborWorks America) and Senior Executives in State and Local Government.

Most recently, Ms. Van Vliet served as the first director of the City of Portland’s Housing Bureau, where her accomplishments include successfully merging two city agencies and broadly engaging the community in development of a new strategic direction for city housing efforts. She is widely credited with improving transparency and accountability, and with establishing and leading an equity agenda aimed at addressing disparities experienced by communities of color in housing access.

Ms. Van Vliet lives in Portland with her husband, Bill, and their two children.
