Partner Ideas Spark Conference Planning
By Floyd Smith, Agency Affairs Director

They want a better conference—with greater diversity of ideas and participant interaction. And they’re getting it, says Victor Merced, director, Oregon Housing and Community Services, speaking of several of the agency’s partner groups.

Among them, the Oregon Hunger Relief Task Force, the Oregon Housing Alliance, and the Community Development Network are determined to give new life to a conference that by most accounts has been a great success in the past.

Last year, Gov. Ted Kulongoski munched a peanut butter sandwich, garnering headlines and driving home his keynote message that many Oregonians must feed their families on the meager aid of food stamps. He thus drew attention to the greatest OHCS conference turnout ever.

Some 500 attendees showed for the 2007 gathering, the first in Salem, where the sponsor support was outstanding, according to Sandy McDonnell (503-986-2012), administrative services manager at Oregon Housing and Community Services.

McDonnell, the behind-the-scenes conference ramrod, has been riding herd on the creative energy of OHCS partners helping plan the 2008 conclave, to be held again in Salem. This year: October 6, 7 and 8.

“The conference matrix is taking great shape,” says McDonnell, complimenting the work of the planning workgroup. “Committee members are increasing the scope of the event by adding broad human service components to the longstanding housing and finance elements, and by energizing interaction between conference-goers.”

Conference Registration details will be available soon.
