November 2009 Invasive Species of the month-Rusty Crayfish

Web-based invasive species calendar that lists important council events and dates. Each month will focus on a new invasive species from the Oregon 100 Worst list, and will include new teacher activities, and a pest risk assessment.

The Oregon Invasive Species Council is seeking nominations for four open seats for positions currently filled by members whose terms expire on December 31, 2009. Nominations for 2010-2011 Council seats are due by November 15, 2009. Terms are for two years, and there is a two-term limit.

Oregon Field Guide embarks on a year-long campaign to engage Oregonians in the battle against invasive species. Oregon Field Guide stories about invasives are available for classroom use, are listed in the "VIDEO" section of the Silent Invasion website. There are also activities if classrooms want to get involved in some hands on work.

This 54-page booklet identifies more than 25 invasive plants that can escape gardens and threaten natural areas. It is illustrated with dozens of photos and offers tips to help gardeners select non-invasive replacement plants appropriate to different regions of Oregon. Alternatives include both native and ornamental plants commonly available in the nursery trade.
