LEWIS D. NEACE, DO, Hillsboro
Dr. Neace, whose specialty is emergency medicine, brings a military background to his service on the Board. A colonel in the Air Force Reserve, he is commander of the 920th Aeromedical Staging Squadron (ASTS), part of the 920th Combat Rescue Wing at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla. He is the pararescue flight surgeon for the United States Air Force (USAF) Reserve command, and is also a member of the Pararescue Medical Directors Board.
In the civilian sector, Dr. Neace practices in the emergency room at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland.
Dr. Neace is a fully qualified crewmember of helicopters and transport aircraft performing long-range combat and civilian rescues. He served as medical commander in a number of major military actions during the 1990s, including Operation Desert Storm in 1991, in which he served at a forward operating location in Kuwait City. Since 1989, he has served as a space shuttle flight surgeon for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Dr. Neace practiced family and emergency medicine, and was chief of staff, at Ocean Beach Hospital in Illwaco, Wash. He served as director of emergency medicine at St. Helens Hospital (Ore.), and was medical director at Eastmoreland Hospital in Portland until it closed in 2003. He
also served two years as Eastmoreland's chief of staff.
Dr. Neace attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology. He earned his doctorate of osteopathic medicine and completed a rotating internship at University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Neace is a distinguished graduate of the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine in Brooks City-Base, Texas.
