FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q.  Will my continuing medical education (CME) be verified by the Board during the renewal process?

A.  It may.  The Board has randomly selected 10% of its licensees whose CME will be audited.

Q.  Approximately how many licensees do you expect to audit?

A.  OMB expects to audit about 2,000 licensees.  They will include MD’s, DO’s, DPM’s and PA’s.

Q.  How will I know if my CME is being audited?

A.  During the renewal process, you will be notified if you have been selected for a CME audit. If you are selected for audit, the audit notification will provide direction on how to submit your materials. If you have questions, please call the OMB call center during business hours.

Q.  How much time do I have to respond to the CME audit notification?

A.  Audited licensees have 30 days from the date of the audit notification to provide course certificates. Failure to comply or misrepresentation of compliance is grounds for fines and/or disciplinary action.

Q. What kind of documentation is required to show compliance with the CME requirements?

A. DO NOT send documentation to the OMB unless you are selected for audit. For compliance by ongoing specialty Board certification/recertification - a copy of your specialty board certificate showing ongoing certification is required. For compliance by completing the appropriate number of hours of CME relevant to your current medical practice – copies of your completed course certificates or official letters from the program administrator are required to document completion of CME hours. Licensees should retain documentation of specialty board certification or completed CME hours in a safe place so that they can be easily produced if the licensee is asked for verification of compliance with the rule.

Q.  How will I know if a particular CME is acceptable?

A.  The certificates that you provide must have your name, the date CME courses were taken, and the CME hours must be obtained in the same biennium that the license is renewed.

Q. Will I need to send CME documentation when I submit my renewal on line?

A. DO NOT send any CME documentation to the OMB unless you are selected for audit.  If you are selected for audit, the audit notification will provide direction on how to submit your materials. If you have questions, please call the OMB call center during business hours.

Q. What happens if I do not respond to the audit notification?

A. Failure to comply or misrepresentation of compliance is grounds for fines and/or disciplinary action. Licensees have 30 days from the date of the audit notification to provide documentation of ongoing board certification or completed CME hours. The number of hours and the type of activities must meet the requirements specified in the rule (see OAR 847-008-0070).  If, at the end of the 30 days, a licensee is deficient in the number of hours completed or does not provide adequate documentation, the licensee will be fined. If the licensee does not comply within 180 days of the date of the audit, the licensee’s license will be suspended for a minimum of 90 days.

Q. I am an Emeritus licensee. What are my CME requirements for renewing?

A. Emeritus physicians must demonstrate compliance with the rule by either ongoing specialty board certification or completion of 15 CME hours per year.  Emeritus physician assistants must demonstrate compliance by either ongoing NCCPA certification or completion of 15 CME hours per year.

Q. I have lifetime certification with my specialty board. Do I have to complete CME hours?

A. Yes. Licensees who have lifetime certification with the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Osteopathic Association’s Bureau of Osteopathic Specialties, the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, or the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine must complete the CME hours described in the rule by the time of renewal.

Q. Are any licensees exempt from the CME requirements?

A. Yes. Licensees in residency training, licensees serving in the military who are deployed outside Oregon for 90 days or more during the reporting period and Volunteer Camp licensees are all exempt from the CME requirements.

Q. Does the CME on pain management required by ORS 409.560 count towards the total CME required?

A. If the CME on pain management was acquired in the correct calendar period, yes, it can be counted towards the total CME required.

Q. I can’t find the pain management CME rule. Where did it go?

A. The pain management continuing education rule has been renumbered. The former OAR 847-010-0100 is now 847-008-0075. The one-time pain management continuing education hours are applicable toward the overall CME requirements described in OAR 847-008-0070 for the reporting period in which they were obtained.
