APPROPRIATE PRESCRIBING WORKSHOP
Since the late1980's the Oregon Medical Board has held a workshop twice a year known as the Appropriate Prescribing Workshop (APW) for its licensees, who have prescribing problems in their management of patients that is within the legal boundaries of both the State and Federal laws and within the generally  acceptable standards of care.  The topics addressed were the management of chronic pain, the laws and rules governing prescribing, communicating with patients seeking prescriptions of controlled substances, the psychology of the chronic pain patient, and the various drugs that are used for these patients.  From 12 to 14 individual physicians and physician assistants were identified by the Board as needing these APW courses.  Licensees of other state boards were allowed to participate if there were openings available after all Oregon licensees were accommodated. Partly as a result of previous APW courses and partly as a result of individuals obtaining the required six hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) in pain management or end-of-life care leading up to the January 2, 2009 deadline, there were no Oregon licensees mandated to take the APW in the last two years.  As a result the APW courses have been discontinued, but could be resumed if the need arises.
