VOLUNTEER EMERITUS LICENSE
APPLYING FOR A VOLUNTEER EMERITUS LICENSE

Physicians who have retired from active practice and are planning on moving to Oregon may want to apply for an Oregon Volunteer Emeritus license if they wish to volunteer for non-remunerative medical service in a health clinic.  A “health clinic” is a public health clinic or a health clinic operated by a charitable corporation that mainly provides primary health, dental or mental health services to low-income patients without charge or using a sliding fee scale based on the income of the patient.

The process for obtaining a Volunteer Emeritus license has been streamlined and the application fee has been waived.  Please click on Volunteer Emeritus Licensure in Oregon for eligibility requirements, a description of the application process, and the application forms.

PRACTICING UNDER A VOLUNTEER EMERITUS LICENSE
  • As a licensee with Emeritus (Volunteer) status, you may do volunteer, non-remunerative practice in a “health clinic” and receive no direct monetary compensation
  • The annual license renewal fee is $50 as of April 18, 2003
  • You may write prescriptions with Emeritus (Volunteer) status, but need to be certain to maintain patient records

The Board’s administrative rules for Licensure of Volunteer Emeritus Physicians can be found in OAR 847-023-0000 - 0015.
