What should I do for my animals?
  • If asked to evacuate, you're encouraged to leave your pets at home, with food and water to last for a few days. Red Cross shelters won't accept pets, and you could spend valuable time rounding up your animals for the trip. However, if concern about your pet's welfare would keep you at home, bring your pets with you. If possible, arrange to leave them with a friend or relative outside the evacuated area. At a reception center on the way out of town, you will be instructed on where to take your pets. Red Cross shelters can't care for pets, except for seeing-eye dogs and hearing dogs.
  • You may not have time to care for livestock, because you have only a short time to evacuate. While these animals may be in danger, the safety of you and your family is more important, You will be told when it is safe to return home to care for your animals.
