What should I have in my shelter kit?
  • If you need to take shelter or evacuate, you may have only a few minutes to protect yourself. Take some time to prepare yourself and your loved ones now.
  • Choose a room on an upstairs floor, if possible, with the fewest openings to the outside. If appropriate for the number of people in your home/office, select the bathroom.
  • Duct tape.
  • Towels for under doors
  • Pre-cut plastic for windows/vents
  • A battery-powered radio
  • Snack foods and water (one gallon per person)
  • Extra clothing for winter months and items to keep kids occupied
  • Store this "kit" in a large plastic bucket in the room you decide to shelter in. You can use the plastic bucket as a toilet, if needed.
