Activation of Air Guard personnel hits close to home

Klamath Falls, OR-Approximately150 members assigned to the Oregon Air National Guard's 173rd Fighter Wing (173 FW) at Kingsley Field will receive official activation orders over the next couple of days from the Department of Defense. The members--including pilots, security forces personnel, food service personnel, and aircraft maintenance specialists--will stand ready to support the nation's air defense program, referred to as Operation Noble Eagle, and are expected to remain in the local area.

Unknown at this time is whether additional 173rd Fighter Wing members will be called to active duty either in support of Operation Noble Eagle or Operation Enduring Freedom, the name given to the operational military campaign overseas currently underway.

"Up until now, our primary mission has been to provide a schoolhouse (training center) for Air National Guard and Active Duty Air Force F-15 air-to-air combat pilots," explained Col. John Adkisson, commander of the 173 FW. "From this day forward and until further notice, many of our people and assets are standing ready to ensure the safety of our Pacific Northwestern skies."

The F-15 schoolhouse, which typically trains over 45 Air National Guard and Active Duty Air Force pilots each year, is expected to continue the training mission throughout the duration of this homeland defense campaign. The added fulltime manning provided by this activation order should allow continued F-15 student pilot production for the duration of Operation Noble Eagle.

To date, approximately 450 Oregon Air National Guard members have been activated in support of Operation Noble Eagle.

A press conference will be held at Kingsley Field on Wednesday, Oct. 17th, at 1:30 p.m. All interested media personnel should report to the main gate at approximately 12:30 p.m. to allow sufficient time for security inspections of vehicles. POC is Maj. Donna Prigmore at 360-921-2503.
