Oregon Guard mobilizes 1249th Engineers to Siuslaw River Fire
Salem - A 120-man package from the Oregon Army National Guard's 1249th Engineer Battalion has been requested by the Oregon Department of Forestry to provide wildland fire suppression assistance at the Siuslaw River Fire, 15 miles southwest of Veneta.
This mobilization is the third time in 12 months that the 1249th Engineers have provided assistance to Oregon's wildland fire suppression effort. The Guardsmen are actively assisting civilian firefighters in actual fire suppression. Traditionally, Guardsmen are used for mop-up, freeing experienced firefighters for direct fire attack. The Guardsmen will provide support to the ODF until they are no longer needed on site.
The Siuslaw River Fire has now spread to 530 acres and is 30 percent contained. Extremely dry fuels and very steep terrain are making this fire difficult to fight. Wildlife and timber resources are threatened. The fire began on Saturday, Aug. 17, with natural causes. It is currently priority five on the regional fire suppression list.
