National Guard activates soldiers For Air National Guard Base Security Missions
Salem, Ore. - Maj. General Alexander Burgin, The Adjutant General, Oregon National Guard will formally activate approximately 66 soldiers from the Army National Guard to augment security at the Air National Guard Bases in Portland and Klamath Falls, Ore. The activation ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at the Salem Armed Forces Reserve Center located at 3225 State Street N.E. in Salem, Ore.
Due to the events of September 11th, 2001, virtually all USAF Guard and Reserve security forces are mobilized and have been involuntarily extended for a second year. Based on a recommendation from the office of the Secretary of Defense and subsequent review by the USAF and Army, the Army will temporarily augment the USAF security forces in the Fifth Army area of responsibility. The Army will provide forces from the Army National Guard Guard units. The duration of the mission is two years.
These soldiers are from units in the Willamette Valley and the southern Oregon areas.
