Meriwether Lewis Elementary students learn of namesake from Oregon National Guard
Portland, Ore. – Students from Meriwether Lewis Elementary will learn about the adventures and westward journey of their school’s namesake in a presentation sponsored by the Oregon National Guard on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 12:30 p.m.
About 50 fourth-grade students will learn about the historical journey and put their hands on replicas of tools and artifacts the explorers took with them on their journey. The visit by the Oregon National Guard is part of an ongoing effort to educate schoolchildren about the significance and importance of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery.
Lewis and Clark commanded an expedition that achieved remarkable scientific discoveries, enhanced geographic knowledge, and built relationships between divergent nations and cultures. The Corps of Discovery succeeded in large part because it was a disciplined Army unit dedicated to mission accomplishment just as the National Guard is today.
The school is located at 4401 SE Evergreen Street in Portland. For more information or to coordinate coverage of the Corps of Discovery presentation, call Capt Mike Braibish at (503) 584-3886, cell (503) 932-5805.
