OREGON SOLDIER KILLED, FOUR WOUNDED IN IRAQ
 
Salem, OREGON – An Oregon National Guard soldier was killed in Iraq June 13, 2004. Four other soldiers were injured in this attack. These soldiers were on patrol in an up-armored HMMWV (Humvee) in Baghdad when an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) detonated.
 
Specialist Eric McKinley, 24, a member of B Company, 2nd Battalion 162nd Infantry, was assigned to the 39th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. B Company is located in Corvallis and part of the 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, headquartered in Cottage Grove, Ore.
 
McKinley was born in Salem, Ore., and his home of residence was Corvallis. Eric is survived by his father, Tom McKinley and mother Karen Hilsendager.
 
Four other soldiers were wounded in the same attack. The wounded soldiers are:
 
Staff Sgt. Phillip Davis, 31, born in Salem, Ore., and resides in Albany, Ore. Sgt Davis was injured when the first IED was detonated. He sustained shrapnel wounds to the right arm, right distal radius fracture and contusion to the right knee and thigh.
 
Sergeant Matthew Zedwick, age 23, born in Portland, Ore., home of record is Bend, Ore. Zedwick was injured when the first IED was detonated. He was treated for shrapnel wounds and returned to duty.
 
Corporal Shane Ward, age 23, born in Forest Grove, Ore., home of residence is Corvallis, Ore. Ward was injured when a secondary IED was detonated behind him as he rushed to the aid of soldiers injured by the initial blast. He sustained a an open fracture to the right scapula.
 
Private 1st Class Richard Olsen, age 23, born in Portland, Ore., home of record is Independence, Ore. Olsen sustained shrapnel wounds to his left arm from an IED but was treated and returned to duty.
