Oregon citizen-soldiers demobilize, return to state

Forty six soldiers will leave active duty service and return to the Oregon National Guard in a ceremony May 4 at 1 p.m. at the Salem Armory Auditorium.

The soldiers are members of the 1186th Military Police Company based out of Salem and Milton-Freewater, and spent much of the last year conducting detainee operations at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The soldiers mobilized in May of 2004 for training at Fort Dix, New Jersey before arriving at Guantanamo, Bay in July. Though these soldiers did not directly engage enemy forces in combat, they came into direct contact on a daily basis with detainees who were captured in the Global War on Terror.

The ceremony is open to the media and the public.
