Governor to swear in new Adjutant General of Oregon National Guard
Governor Ted Kulongoski will swear in Maj. Gen. Raymond F. Rees as the Adjutant General of the Oregon National Guard July 1 at 10:00 a.m. in a ceremony at the Capitol.
This is the first time that an Adjutant General for Oregon has been appointed to the position for a third term. Rees' earlier tenures in the command were May 1987 to June 1991 and August 1994 to March 1999.
Rees has also served as the Vice Chief and Acting Chief of the National Guard Bureau. He returns to Oregon after serving as the Chief of Staff for U.S. Northern Command, the agency responsible for military support of Homeland Defense, and Chief of Staff for North American Air Defense Command, a bi-national agency responsible for defense of North America.
Media are welcome to attend, and Rees will be available for interviews after the ceremony.
Rees' biography is available at: http://www.ngb.army.mil/ngbgomo/library/bio/rees_rf.html
The ORNG serves both a state and federal mission. Oregon's citizen-soldiers and airmen may be called to duty to support the state in times of crisis such as forest fires, flooding, or response to mass casualty incidents. If mobilized for federal missions, they are temporarily assigned to the active duty components of the military.
The ORNG comprises more than 6,000 soldiers and 2,200 airmen. There are nearly 900 ORNG members on duty around the world in support of the war on terror.
High and low resolution photos of Maj. Gen. Rees are available with this release.
