Oregon National Guard Launches Operation Backpack to Help Victims of Hurricane Katrina
Salem - The Oregon National Guard is partnering with the Oregon Department of Education to launch Operation Backpack, a donation drive to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Superintendent Susan Castillo is asking students, teachers, and members of the community to put together backpacks filled with pens, papers, books, and other school supplies for victims of the hurricane. The supplies will help students and teachers in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana get "back to school" as quickly as possible
Operation Backpack is an offshoot of "Operation Shoebox," a similar effort launched in the early 1990's to help with humanitarian efforts in El Salvador.
Participants can drop off the much needed items at any Oregon National Guard Armory. A complete list is attached. You can access a list of the most requested items by going to www.ode.state.or.us/GO/Katrina
The Oregon National Guard will be responsible for transporting the donations to wherever the evacuees are. For more information on this effort, please contact Ed Dennis, Superintendent Castillo's Chief of Staff at ed.dennis@state.or.us
