Oregon Army National Guard promotes Cameron A. Crawford to the rank of Brigadier General

Salem, Ore. - Colonel Cameron A. Crawford, Deputy Commander of the Oregon Army National Guard's 41st Brigade Combat Team, was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in Salem, Ore., on Friday, January 19, 2007.

Oregon Governor, Theodore R. Kulongoski, Commander in Chief of the Oregon National Guard, Maj. Gen. Raymond F. Rees, Adjutant General for the Oregon National Guard, and other dignitaries, friends, and relatives attended the formal event held at the Anderson Readiness Center.

Crawford commands approximately 3,500 soldiers in the Oregon Army National Guard's 41st Brigade Combat Team, headquartered in Tigard, Ore.

Crawford has accepted a one-year assignment as the deputy commander of Joint Task Force – Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where he will assist the JTF GTMO Commander, Navy Rear Admiral Harry B. Harris, with overseeing nearly 2,000 service members from all branches of military service that make-up the Joint Task Force, and the overall operations of Guantanamo Bay to include detainee operations.

There are approximately 400 detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, including members of the Al Qaeda and senior leadership of the Taliban. Many detainees have direct personal knowledge of the 9-11 hijackers, the plot, or both.

"Whatever the future holds for Guantanamo, the mission today is to safely and humanely detain enemy combatants and to collect intelligence in support of the war on terror," said Crawford. "I'm very excited to represent the Oregon National Guard in such a high visibility environment."

Crawford said the promotion and new duty assignment is the culmination of 30 years of military experience, and his unique qualifications have prepared him for this type of mission.

In addition to many years of experience as an officer in the Military Police Corps, his qualifications also include a Master of Arts in Correctional Administration from Western Oregon University, graduation from the Military Police Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, and he speaks Spanish.

Crawford and two other Oregon Army National Guardsmen, Capt. Abe Gilman of Salem and 2nd Lt. Tiffany Ramsdal of Monmouth, will join members of the Puerto Rico National Guard at Fort Lewis, Wash. next week for one month of training before deploying to Cuba in February.
