Oregon National Guard, Salem Hospital joint-exercise a success, organizers say

The Oregon National Guard's 102nd Civil Support Team (WMD) conducted a training exercise at Salem Hospital on Thursday, May 31, 2007.

The exercise simulated the CST's response to a suspected terrorist attack at the facility. The event provided valuable insight into the response capability of the CST and of Salem Hospital to an emergency situation.

According to 102nd CST commander, Lt. Col. Steve Ferrell, the exercise was a huge success.

"The biggest thing is we had a chance to work with the folks at the Salem Hospital and show them some of our capabilities and how we can augment what they have available (in such a situation)," Ferrell said.

The 102nd Civil Support Team is a joint-force unit within the Oregon National Guard which is tasked with assisting first-responders in the event of a local terrorist attack or incident of weapons of mass destruction. The unit is one of 55 throughout the country.
