Oregon National Guard, Yamhill County to dedicate new Juvenile Dept. building (27 July)
Yamhill County Juvenile Department and the Oregon National Guard will dedicate the county's new 5000-square-foot pole barn at noon Friday. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and following barbeque lunch. The ceremony will be held at the site: 12555 SW River Bend Road, Whiteson, Oregon 97128.

A pole barn is a large building that can be used for storage, indoor work, and more. Like a regular barn, the building is steel-sided and enclosed with pole supports throughout. The initial use of the building will be storage of chopped wood for the youth of the juvenile department. The building will also give them cover while working when inclement weather would otherwise preclude their activities.

The juvenile department in Yamhill County operates for kids who got in trouble with the law. They may be given public service requirements, among other sentences, and the Yamhill County Juvenile Department provides the opportunity to serve the requirements.

The barn's construction was a joint effort between the county, the Oregon National Guard, and United Rentals. "They [Yamhill County] provided the materials, permits and funding; we provided the equipment and skilled troop labor," said Capt. Robert Earhart, Program Officer for the Oregon National Guard's Innovative Readiness Training Program, describing the project. Soldiers of the 1249 Engineer Battalion contributed more than 2000 hours on the project in support of the county's youth rehabilitation efforts.

Throughout the year, the Oregon National Guard supports state, county and local governmental agencies through various projects like this, contributing in the areas of public safety, search and rescue, disaster response and emergency management.
