Oregon National Guard Hosts Oregon Civil Air Patrol cadet leadership encampment

The Oregon Wing of the U.S. Civil Air Patrol, is holding their annual cadet encampment July 28 - Aug. 4 at the Oregon National Guard's Oregon Military Academy facility in Monmouth, Ore.

The annual event, the third of its kind at this facility, teaches youth about leadership, aerospace, and emergency services in a military-styled setting. In addition, youth from across the state gain a basic understanding of military tradition and procedure. Many Civil Air Patrol cadets ultimately join the military services, including the Oregon Army and Air National Guard.

Activities include daily physical training, orientation flights in small aircraft, classroom instruction in a wide variety of topics, practical exercises, and a trip to the Portland Air National Guard base for a tour of the facility and equipment used by the Oregon Air National Guard and U.S. Air Force Reserve.

The Oregon National Guard has supported this event since the 1990s, when the events were held at Camp Rilea in Warrenton and Coos Head Air National Guard base in Coos Bay. More recently, the encampment has been held at Kingsley Field Air National Guard base in Klamath Falls and now at the Oregon Military Academy.

Civil Air Patrol is an all-volunteer, benevolent organization, designated by Congress as the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and mandated with three missions: a cadet program to develop leaders, aerospace education designed to bring awareness and understanding of aviation science to both members and the general public, and emergency services such as disaster relief and search and rescue.

Support of the Oregon Wing of Civil Air Patrol is one of many ways the Oregon National Guard provides services and support to civil authorities and the people of the State of Oregon. The Oregon National Guard also participates in search and rescue missions, wildland firefighting, and disaster relief missions as needed within Oregon. Other youth services include the Oregon Youth Challenge and Camp Rosenbaum. Additionally, the Oregon National Guard has deployed more than 4,000 troops of both the Army and Air components in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
