Oregon Air National Guard welcomes F-22 Raptor Cockpit Demonstrator team

The F-22 Raptor is the world's most advanced fighter aircraft, and the Oregon Air National Guard invites members of the media to learn how the 142nd Fighter Wing could use the F-22 in their continuing mission to protect the Pacific Northwest.

Members of the 142nd Fighter Wing and Lockheed-Martin, the primary contractor, will showcase the unique capabilities of the F-22 through a cockpit demonstrator at the Portland Air National Guard Base at 1 p.m. on Mar. 7.

For decades the 142nd Fighter Wing at the Portland Air National Guard base has defended hundreds of billions of dollars worth of industry, infrastructure, government, and private property ranging from the northern California border to the southern Canadian Border.

The F-22 can drastically improve how the142nd FW conducts its mission of protecting America's northwestern air and maritime borders.

The Air Force requested 381 F-22s over the coming years to meet a variety of needs, but budget restrictions have limited the purchase to 183.

In light of recent groundings of the F-15 for mechanical failures, some have questioned whether or not the time to replace the F-15 fleet is now. A primary candidate for that replacement, sooner rather than later, is the fifth generation fighter F-22 Raptor.

The Oregon National Guard supports dual missions to the state and nation, maintaining a high level of readiness to respond to domestic emergencies as well as mobilizations for federal service.
