Oregon National Guard teams with teens to produce action hero film

A group of Portland-area teens were recently selected for the nation's leading teen filmmaking competition, Samsung Mobile Fresh Films. The Portland film was produced with the support of the Oregon Army National Guard. Surviving Emily debuts online from August 7-13th, where it competes against other teen-created short films for the votes of millions across America, a Hollywood premiere, and the accolades of a Hollywood jury.

The film crew, comprised of eleven teen filmmakers, was handpicked from thousands of Hollywood hopefuls nationwide to experience an action packed week filled with excitement both on set and off. They were challenged to create a short Action Hero film in just seven days. Teens coordinated all aspects of the film's production - from story to storyboard, casting, shooting and editing during seven action-packed days. With the help of the Oregon National Guard, the Portland filmmakers were able to make an even more authentic Action-Hero film.

The Oregon Army National Guard offered their resources to the teen film crew, including expertise for rescue scenes and access to equipment, like a Blackhawk helicopter from the Oregon Army National Guard's C/7-158 Aviation unit, based in Salem. In addition, several Oregon Army Guard members had roles in the film.

"Samsung Mobile Fresh Films puts technology and knowledge into the hands of teens who would otherwise never know such an amazing field," noted Jacob Graf, Portland Samsung Mobile Fresh Filmmaker.

"The National Guard has been serving and defending our country for nearly 370 years" said Colonel Raymond Meyer, Recruiting and Retention Commander for the Oregon Army National Guard. "Yet our most important work is in serving and aiding our local communities in times of floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and other natural disasters. So we know more than a thing or two about action heroes," he added.

The Portland Samsung Mobile Fresh Films crew and their short film, Surviving Emily, will compete in an online voting competition at www.fresh-films.com from August 7-13th. The film faces off against two other short films produced in St. Louis and Boston.

America can vote for the Portland film online at www.fresh-films.com or text their vote for "PORTLAND" to 95615. Voting online and via text is unlimited from August 7- August 13.

The top ranked Action Hero film will move onto the final round of voting, August 21-27, where it will compete against other top teen-created films in the Uncommon Comedy & Big Life Drama categories. The winning film crew will attend a Hollywood premiere at AFI Fest, where they will be eligible to win laptops and Samsung mobile phones.
