Oregon Air National Guard deploys security forces unit to Iraq


PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Oregon Air National Guard deployed members of their security forces squadron to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

About 30 Airmen from the Portland Air National Guard Base were mobilized in a ceremony at the airbase attended by Oregon Guard leadership, friends and family.

Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski, Maj. Gen. Raymond F. Rees, The Adjutant General, Oregon National Guard, and Brig. Gen. Daniel B. O'Hollaren, Assistant Adjutant General (Air), attended the ceremony and wished the unit well during their upcoming deployment.

The unit will undergo three weeks of combat skills training in Fort Wolters, Texas, before departing to Kirkuk, Iraq in January, 2009. The unit will return to Oregon in mid-2009.

The unit provides security for the Portland Air National Guard Base.

There are approximately 2,400 Airmen in the Oregon Air National Guard, which is comprised of two units; The 142nd Fighter Wing in Portland, and the 173rd Fighter Wing in Klamath Falls, both of whom operate the F-15 Eagle strike fighter. Other support units include the 116th Air Control Squadron in Warrenton, and headquarters personnel based in Salem, Ore.
