New Oregon National Guard facility to create 1300 jobs

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – A construction project creating more than 1300 jobs as well as honoring the 41st Infantry Division was celebrated at a ground breaking ceremony on Camp Withycombe, May 29.

Governor Ted Kulongoski, along with Maj. Gen. Raymond F. Rees, The Adjutant General, Oregon, and Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Brig. Gen Frank Cipolla, Deputy Commander of the 88th Regional Support Command, U.S. Army Reserve, Clackamas County Commissioner Lynn Peterson and members of The 41st Infantry Division Association, as well as other high-ranking military officials and community leaders participated in the ceremony.

The ceremony was held to commemorate the beginning of construction of the 41 Infantry Division Armed Forces Reserve Center, a $75 million, 250,000 square foot facility, which when completed will house Oregon National Guard and Army Reserve units.

The ceremony highlighted the importance of the project for the jobs it will create.

"It will be an important boost to our state and local economies during this difficult economic time," said Kulongoski.

The facility is funded by the federal government, which will contribute $72 million. The State of Oregon will contribute another $2.9 million.

"We will be putting Oregonians to work, and putting more than $75 million into the economy," the governor said.

The construction project is projected to be completed August 2011.
