ORANG 224 Eng Company continues community construction projects during upcoming active duty schedule
ALBANY, Ore.--The 224 Engineer Company continues horizontal construction operations at North Riverside Park in Independence, Ore., during its annual training, June 12-26, 2010.

Approximately 22 Soldiers will participate in the project, coordinated through the Oregon Army National Guard's Innovative Readiness Training Program. The Soldiers receive valuable training in heavy equipment operations, grading, compaction, surveying, troop leading, and project management.

The work at North Riverside Park is a continuation of the 224's efforts during the summer of 2009, when the Soldiers spent a over four months constructing eight soccer fields, four baseball fields, two softball fields, and a 1,200-foot concrete block retaining wall.

The park still requires final grading in several areas and the unit is pleased to return for their two weeks of training. In addition to its significant training value, this and other IRT projects provide an opportunity for Oregon National Guard Soldiers to have a presence in local Oregon communities, and generate positive media coverage for the National Guard.

The 224 Engineer Company will also conduct road construction operations at Camp Adair during its active duty timeframe. The unit is commanded by Capt. Joseph Bessman and 1st Sgt. Jeff Timshel, and falls under the command of the 1249 Engineer Battalion and 82 Brigade.
