Oregon National Guard laptop stolen
A federal laptop belonging to the Oregon National Guard was reported stolen from an Oregon Guard member's vehicle, June 21. The Guard member was using the computer to conduct work from home.

The laptop may have contained sensitive personal information concerning military service members. A report about the theft was immediately filed with the Portland Police Department.

Service members potentially affected are being individually contacted by both the Oregon National Guard and The National Guard Bureau.

"Although this laptop is password protected, with potential exposure of individual personal information, we are doing everything possible to notify individuals about the theft," said Capt. Stephen Bomar, Chief of Public Affairs for the Oregon National Guard.

Legal services are available for those who may require assistance through the ORNG Office of the Staff Judge Advocate.

"This is a precaution to ensure the protection and security of each member's
information," Bomar said.

An initial fraud alert stays on your credit report for 90 days. When you place this alert on your credit report with one nationwide consumer reporting company, you'll get information about ordering one free credit report from each of the companies. It's prudent to wait about a month after your information was stolen before you order the report, as suspicious activity may not show up right away. Once you get your reports, review them for suspicious activity—like inquiries from companies you didn't contact, accounts you didn't open, and debts on your accounts that you can't explain. Double-check your SSN, address(es), name or initials, and employers for accuracy.
